Handle Removal Assistance Tool
For extended handle removal, use the Handle Removal Assistance Tool to properly secure the pump rod and protect your pump components.
The Handle Removal Assistance Tool:
- Keeps the pump rod at the correct height
- Prevents the rod from dropping into the cylinder
- Makes reinstallation easier
- Protects the pump cylinder from damage
Removal Procedure
Basic Handle Removal
- Locate the clevis pin at the top of the pump head where the handle connects to the pump rod
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) that secures the clevis pin
- Slide out the clevis pin to disconnect the handle from the pump rod
- Lift the handle off the pump head
- Store securely in a dry location
For Extended Removal
- Follow steps 1-4 above
- Install the Handle Removal Assistance Tool to secure the pump rod in place
- This prevents the rod from moving and protects downhole components
Reinstalling the Handle
- If using the Handle Removal Assistance Tool, remove it first
- Position the handle on the pump head
- Align the clevis with the pump rod
- Insert the clevis pin
- Secure with cotter pin if applicable
- Test the handle movement
Important Considerations
Without Assistance Tool
If removing the handle without the assistance tool:
- The pump rod may drop slightly
- Additional priming strokes may be needed on restart
- Risk of cylinder damage if rod drops too far
Proper Storage
Store the removed handle:
- In a dry location
- Protected from damage
- Where you can easily find it
