Simple Pump Well Pump Basics - Well Casing Clearances
In this video, Steve Schmid, owner and operator of Simple Pump Co., LLC, discusses the casing clearances for installing a hand pump on a well. A Simple Pump can fit in a two-inch casing or larger, making it suitable for sandpoint wells and wells with three-inch, four-inch, or larger casings. However, if there is an electric pump installed in a smaller casing, such as a three-inch or two-inch casing, a hand pump may not fit. In such cases, consider a shallow well suction pump that can be tied into the submersible line. For four-inch casings and larger, a Simple Pump can be installed alongside an electric pump, as long as the submersible pipe is no larger than 1-1/4" in diameter. A five-inch casing can accommodate a Simple Pump with a submersible pipe of up to 1-1/2" in diameter. However, a two-inch submersible pipe in a five-inch casing does not leave enough space for a hand pump. On the other hand, for six-inch casings and above, there is sufficient clearance for installing a hand pump with various submersible pipe sizes. There are exceptions when using pitless adapters, which may restrict the space available for installing a hand pump. Whether you're in the process of finding a hand pump or filling out our quote form, understanding these measurements is crucial. Steve explains that you have a few options when it comes to measuring your well casing: - circumference, - inside diameter (ID), or - outer diameter (OD). If your submersible pump prevents you from removing the cap, Steve recommends using the circumference measurement. He demonstrates how to use a cloth tape for accurate results, emphasizing its importance in obtaining the correct cap size. However, if you have a pitless adapter, removing the existing cap is simple. Steve explains how to measure the inner and outer diameters in this case.
