Well depth is one of several critical measurements needed to configure your Simple Pump system. Understanding the difference between well depth and static water level helps ensure proper pump sizing.
Well Depth Defined
Total Well Depth: The distance from ground level to the bottom of your well bore.
This is the complete depth the well was drilled, regardless of where the water level is.
Well Depth vs. Static Water Level
These two measurements are often confused but are quite different:
| Measurement | Definition | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Well Depth | Ground to well bottom | Maximum cylinder position |
| Static Water Level | Ground to water surface | Pump sizing (most important) |
Example
- Well drilled to: 300 feet (well depth)
- Water level at: 120 feet (static water level)
- Water column: 180 feet (water available)
Why Well Depth Matters
Cylinder Positioning
- Cylinder must be below water level
- But not at the very bottom
- Leave clearance above well bottom
Drop Pipe Planning
- Total drop pipe length approaches well depth
- Minus clearance at bottom
- Minus distance to water surface
System Configuration
We use well depth to:
- Plan drop pipe combination
- Ensure cylinder won't hit bottom
- Account for water level changes
Static Water Level is More Important
For pump sizing, static water level determines:
Cylinder Selection
| Cylinder | Maximum Static Water Level |
|---|---|
| 100CA | 325 feet |
| 125CA | 225 feet |
| 200CA | 110 feet |
Pumping Effort
- Deeper water = more effort per stroke
- Larger cylinder = more effort per stroke
- Both factors matter
How to Measure Well Depth
Method 1: Check Records
- Well driller's report
- County well records
- Property records
Method 2: Measure Directly
- Remove well cap carefully
- Lower weighted line to bottom
- Feel when weight hits bottom
- Mark line at ground level
- Measure line length
Important Notes
- Don't drop the weight in the well
- Use secure attachment
- Have helper assist
Typical Well Depths
| Region/Type | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Shallow domestic | 50-150 feet |
| Average residential | 150-300 feet |
| Deep wells | 300-500+ feet |
| Artesian wells | Varies widely |
What We Need for Your Quote
- Static water level (most important)
- Total well depth
- Well casing diameter
If you only know one measurement, we can still help - but knowing both ensures the best configuration.
Don't Know Your Well Depth?
If you can't find records or measure:
- We can configure based on static water level
- Conservative estimates work for ordering
- Professional measurement available
