Accurate well specifications are essential for ordering the correct Simple Pump system. Here's how to find or measure the information you need.
Key Specifications Needed
Essential Measurements
- Static Water Level - Depth from surface to water
- Well Depth - Total depth of the well
- Casing Diameter - Inside diameter of well casing
Secondary Information
- Casing material (PVC, steel)
- Existing equipment (submersible, pitless)
- Well yield (if known)
Finding Existing Records
Well Driller's Report
The most reliable source of well information:
- Filed when well was drilled
- Contains all original specifications
- May be in your closing documents
- Check with previous property owner
State/County Records
Many states require well registration:
- Contact your state geological survey
- County health department
- Water resources department
- Some records available online
Well Contractor
The company that drilled or services your well:
- Name may be on well cap or equipment
- May have records on file
- Can measure if needed
Property Records
Check your property files:
- Home inspection report
- Real estate disclosure forms
- Septic/well system documentation
- Title insurance documents
Measuring Your Well
If records aren't available, you can measure:
Measuring Static Water Level
Materials Needed:
- Measuring tape (at least 100 feet)
- Weight (small fishing weight works)
- Something to detect water (chalk, electronic water level indicator)
Chalk Method:
- Remove well cap
- Attach weight to measuring tape
- Coat bottom with chalk
- Lower until weight hits bottom
- Pull up and note where chalk washed off
- That point is your static water level
Electronic Method:
- Water level indicators beep or light when contacting water
- More accurate and easier to read
- Available from well supply companies
Measuring Well Depth
Using the same setup:
- Lower tape until weight hits bottom
- Mark tape at well cap level
- Retrieve and measure
- This is your well depth
Be careful when working around open well casings. Have a helper present. Don't drop anything into the well.
Measuring Casing Diameter
From the Top:
- Remove well cap
- Measure inside diameter across opening
- Common sizes: 4", 5", 6", 8"
Without Removing Cap:
- Measure outside circumference of casing
- Divide by 3.14 (π) for outside diameter
- Subtract wall thickness for inside diameter
- Or note the size printed on the casing
Common Casing Sizes
| Nominal Size | Typical ID | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4" | 4.026" | Standard residential |
| 5" | 5.047" | Less common |
| 6" | 6.065" | Common, more room |
| 8" | 7.981" | Older wells, commercial |
What If I Can't Measure?
Professional Measurement
Well service companies can:
- Measure water level accurately
- Video inspect well interior
- Identify existing equipment
- Assess well condition
Estimates
If you must estimate:
- Static water level often 20-40% of well depth
- Check neighbors with similar wells
- Local well drillers know typical area conditions
