Proper handling of Simple Pump PVC drop pipes ensures successful installation and long-term reliability. This guide covers best practices for handling Schedule 80 PVC components.

Drop Pipe Specifications

Material

  • Type: Schedule 80 PVC
  • Size: 1" nominal diameter
  • Threads: Male NPT
  • Strength: Highest rated PVC schedule

Why Schedule 80?

  • Thicker walls than Schedule 40
  • Higher pressure rating
  • Better thread strength
  • Long-term durability

Handling Guidelines

Storage

Before Installation:

  • Store in dry location
  • Protect from direct sunlight (UV)
  • Keep away from heat sources
  • Store horizontally on flat surface
  • Avoid bending or deflection

Temperature Considerations:

  • PVC becomes more brittle when cold
  • More flexible when warm
  • Ideal handling: 60-80°F
  • Allow to acclimate if stored in cold

Transportation

Moving Pipes:

  • Support along length
  • Don't carry by one end
  • Avoid impacts and drops
  • Protect threaded ends
  • Bundle securely if multiple

Thread Protection

Critical Areas

The male NPT threads are precision machined:

  • Protect from impacts
  • Keep clean and dry
  • Don't cross-thread
  • Inspect before installation

Protective Caps

If provided:

  • Leave on until installation
  • Replace if removed for inspection
  • Don't force onto threads

Installation Best Practices

Thread Preparation

Teflon Tape Application:

  • Maximum 3 layers (maintenance)
  • Maximum 5 layers (new installation)
  • Wrap in direction of threads
  • Cover threads completely
  • Never use liquid sealant or pipe dope

Thread Engagement

Thread engagement must not exceed 5/8 inch. Over-tightening can damage threads or crack pipe.

Proper Technique:

  1. Apply Teflon tape
  2. Hand-tighten first
  3. Continue to snug (firm hand pressure)
  4. Do not use excessive force
  5. Verify 5/8" maximum engagement

Coupler Connection

When connecting to stainless steel coupler:

  • Clean threads
  • Apply Teflon tape to male threads
  • Thread by hand first
  • Tighten firmly but not excessively

Avoiding Common Problems

Cross-Threading

Prevention:

  • Start threads by hand
  • Align carefully before turning
  • If resistance felt, back off and restart
  • Never force connection

Signs of Cross-Threading:

  • Difficulty threading
  • Uneven engagement
  • Visible thread damage
  • Leaks after installation

Over-Tightening

Problems Caused:

  • Cracked pipe
  • Damaged threads
  • Difficult disassembly later
  • Potential leaks

Proper Tightness:

  • Firm hand-tight
  • Perhaps 1/4 turn past hand-tight
  • Should not require tools for initial tightening
  • Wrenches for final snugging only

Impact Damage

Avoid:

  • Dropping pipes
  • Striking against hard surfaces
  • Standing pipes on end (stress concentration)
  • Letting pipes swing and hit objects

Cold Weather Handling

Extra Caution When Cold

PVC is more brittle in cold temperatures:

  • Handle more carefully
  • Avoid impacts completely
  • Warm gradually before installation if very cold
  • Don't force connections

Acclimation

If pipes are cold:

  • Bring to room temperature
  • Allow several hours
  • Handle gently until warmed

Inspection

Before Installation

Check each pipe for:

  • Crack or damage
  • Thread condition
  • Straightness
  • Cleanliness

Reject If:

  • Visible cracks
  • Damaged threads
  • Significant scratches
  • Deformation

After Installation

Protecting Installed System

Once in well:

  • Cap well properly
  • Protect from debris
  • Verify connections before lowering further
  • Inspect periodically
